Discussion: Governing Boards

One of the many responsibilities of a Governing Board is to ensure an organization’s image is not tarnished. To be effective, it is essential to recruit skilled board members. To do so, they need to be effective in their role. As an organization grows, often the board will, too, which makes it essential to recruit skilled board members. Systems still need to be in place to ensure board members receive orientation, training, evaluation, and any other necessary steps to ensure the board is effective.
To prepare for this Discussion, reflect on any experiences you have had as a board member and what you think the roles of boards will be in the future.
By Day 3
Post a personal experience you may have had as a board member, if any, of a nonprofit organization wherever you reside in the world. Provide an analysis of what you foresee for the future of a nonprofit governing board of a nonprofit organization of your choice. Explain whether you anticipate greater demands for boards and their members to be more accountable (or accountable in different way) than is the case today. If so, how? Please explain your perspective and defend it with evidence from the field or from the literature.

Human Resourses – Week 7 paper

Recall your chosen firm and industry you have been using throughout the course. For this assignment, you will identify the top three major safety and health issues in your firm, and write a policy on each, consistent with Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards. There is a minimum requirement of 500 words for EACH of the three job policies.

Each of the five domains of OSHA must be considered when writing these three policies:

1. Hazard communication: How will you notify people of potentially dangerous or unhealthy work conditions?

 2. Blood-borne pathogens: How will you protect employees from blood-borne pathogens such as AIDS?

3. Personal protective equipment (PPE): What equipment or tools will your employees in this job require to work safely?

4. Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs): How will you prevent CTDs that come from repetitive movement (e.g., carpel tunnel syndrome)?

5. Work assignments: How will you handle potentially dangerous work assignments, especially to protect unborn babies?

NOTE: This is a three-part assignment. All three of the policies (500 words each) you write should go on one document. This one document is what will be uploaded to Blackboard.

Any sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations in APA format.

I need a reflection about this petitions

No child living in America today should have to worry about whether they’ll have a place to sleep at night or enough food to eat. But these are daily realities for the 1 in 6 poor children in this country. Children like me.
Growing up on the North Side of Minneapolis, I know what it means to struggle. I’ve been homeless, spending school nights sleeping on park benches. I’ve been hungry, not knowing where my next meal would come from. I know what it means to have to work to support your family when you need to be focusing on school. And I know that other kids shouldn’t have to face these struggles. Every child in America should be able to focus on learning, growing, and just being a kid.
Did you know it’s been 20 years since there was a question about how to address child poverty in a presidential debate? But a child is born into poverty every minute in this country. Those children will face hunger, homelessness, illness, violence and toxic stress. And those children deserve answers about how the next president of the United States is going to make sure they get a fair shot at a better life.
Ignoring this issue on the national debate stage sends a signal that children living in poverty are not a priority. To fix the problem, we need to put a spotlight on it.
That’s why I’m calling for a question in the presidential debates about child poverty. I want to know what the next president is going to do to make sure the next generation won’t struggle like I did. Will you join me? Please sign the petition today.

Ethics 2

Assignment: Find/Review an ethical article using the following as an Example. (Must be a scholarly peer reviewed source) 500-650 words
Example:
Ethics in the News
Title of article: “Aid in Dying Soon Will be Available to More Americans. Few Will Choose It.” Link to article https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/08/health/aid-in-dying-states.html
Date of article: July 8, 2019
Ethical questions raised by this article: (WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE WHY HOW)
– What determines “terminally ill” patients?
– What are the numbers of physician aid deaths per year?
– Who decides when a life is worth living verses not worth living?
– Why is physician aid death prohibited by religious group?
– What are the current laws for lethal prescriptions?
II. My first reaction to the ethical issues raised by this article:
An act-utilitarian would say that euthanasia is morally permissible because it results in the greatest happiness for all people involved. When someone is ill, not only is the patient suffering, but family members and close friends suffer as well. If the patient’s situation was hopeless and had no chance of surviving, an act-utilitarian would decide that the greatest net happiness would result from killing the patient or letting him die. As the article stated, Oregon’s legislature approved a law stating that physician’s with patients, who they believe will die within 15 days, has a waiting period, which can decide how an act-utilitarian can identify a person having no chance of surviving.
III. Someone taking the opposite point of view might say this:
The view from the Natural Law theory, would say that any sort of euthanasia and physician-aid suicide is permissible wrong. It is wrong in any way because people have a moral duty to preserve any life. With allowing ill patients to make their own choices on whether to live or die through a drug, is morally wrong because life is not being saved and death is not naturally occurring.
IV. What I think after considering these issues further and why I think the way I do:
A Kantian Theorist could go about euthanasia in different ways. One approach can be that euthanasia is morally wrong because we are treating a person’s body as a disposable thing, so how could you see how much happiness is developed, if one is treating another as disposable trash? How would it differ though if someone is in a comma? As a Kantian Theorist, one would say it is permissible because the patient is no longer a human.
V. One connection I can make between this article and something else I know about (whether from personal experience, school, a book I have read, a movie I’ve seen or anything else):
I think Physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia should be allowed and should be a patient’s choice. I think that there should be certain guidelines and rules, as Oregon has the 15-day limit. I believe that we all have a right to our own bodies, and if someone is suffering and going through unbearable pain, they should have the choice. Recently in my life, one of my best friends suffered from Leukemia for 2 years. She missed many of our school events and day to day childhood memories. Doctors told her she only would have 4 months left to live if the chemo didn’t begin to work. The pain that her family and I watched her go through every day, was painful to see and she was done fighting. There were many nights near the end, where she wished she could just give up and let go because she was mentally and physically exhausted from the pain. She passed away two summers ago, and even though it was painful for all of us of her passing, I knew she was no longer in pain. I believe with certain guidelines and procedures; people should have a right to their own body and decisions when it comes to being ill.

The Time Value of Money—Preparing for Home Ownership

Assignment 2:
Upon graduating from Argosy University with a degree in Finance, John Simple found a great job as a banking officer with Capital Two Bank in Dallas. Although he and his partner Joan had several college loans that required payments, their goal was to set aside funds for the next five years so that they could get out of the small apartment in Irving, Texas. After reviewing the listings in the areas surrounding DFW and speaking to their bosses about possible transfers, John and Joan decided upon Plano as their desired future location for a home.
Based on house prices they received from a local realtor, they determined that the home they needed currently costs around $178,000 which includes 2% closing costs. To avoid paying Private Mortgage Insurance, John and Joan need to make a down payment of 20%. Since they are saving for the potential purchase, it will be five years before they buy the home. This gives them time to save for the down payment, moving, and furniture costs, which they estimate will be 10% more than the required down payment. They also expect home prices in Plano to continue to increase each year at 2.5% per annum rate as presented by their realtor.
John, being the finance graduate, wanted to adequately prepare for their future purchase and told Joan that he would take all this information and present an overview of how much would be required once their estimated purchase date became a reality. In addition, John would show how much money they needed to save each month in their house investment account at E-Trade, which averages 5% annual return.
Tasks:
Write a 2 page paper where you answer the questions above. Make sure you identify the question and then respond showing all calculations using math or Excel functions.

What is the estimated purchase price of the home in 5 years?
How much would need to be saved for the down payment?
How much would need to be saved for closing, moving, and furniture costs?
Considering that they have $10,000 already saved (half of which was provided by Joan’s parents as a wedding gift), how much money do they need to save each month to reach their goal?
Suppose John could change investment plans at E-Trade and earn an additional 1.5% per annum without additional risk, how much money do they need to save each month to reach their goal? How much in investment dollars would they save by increasing their investment percentage?

Submission Details:
If you use Microsoft Excel, please attach a copy of your worksheet so your instructor can review the work. In addition, explain the theory used in solving this case using no less than 2 outside references. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

The process of external acquisition -purchasing ten computers, from outside vendors, is said to be much like shopping for a vehicle, you don’t make a purchase at the first dealership (Valacich & Schneider 2016) . The goal is to acquire the best laptop at the best price during the vendor’s bids. In these proposals, there are things to be considered. The systems development life cycle describes the life of an information system from conception to retirement (Hoffer et al, 2014). This is important because when making this transaction of purchasing 10 computers, you want to ensure that this investment will be lasting. You want to consider these four phases when making a decision:
1.System planning and selection: In this phase, you identify, plan and select a development project from all possible projects that could be performed.
2.System analysis:During this phase, you determine requirements. Basically what is needed from the proposed system.
3.System design: During this third phase, the details are chosen such as processing, databases and file.
4.System implementation and operation: This last phase entails software programming and testing.
Knowing these things, its important to understand first hand what the computer capabilities are. Do they fit the organizations needs? If so, is the price appropriate? After all you’re buying 10 so this is a big investment. Secondly, in reviewing the proposals, it is crucial to know the software the computer has. Next, consider the cost. Vendors will try to compete for this project because you will be purchasing 10, which means more than likely, they are offering you the best price. Compare prices and find the one that best fits the organizations budget. A very important thing to consider when reviewing these proposals is, what type of customer service do these companies offer and what type of warranty is offered. Will they cover any repairs and how soon? Lastly, when in doubt, check what the customer reviews are on the vendor and computer. It is likely that you will come across reviews that may help in your decision making.

The Argument of Abortion

In On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion, Mary Anne Warren discusses a few arguments against abortion, namely bringing into play whether the fetus is actually a person, or “not a member of the moral community”. She defends that abortion is a morally sound action.
Don Marquis, in his essay An Argument that Abortion is Wrong, takes the opposite stance. He claims “that abortion, except perhaps in rare instances, is seriously wrong”.The first thing we read in Warren’s article is the thought experiment first conceived by Judith Thomson. It’s an analogy that uses a normal person, male or female, and a famous violinist. Let’s say the Society of Music Lovers kidnaps you, and hooks you up to this dying violinist. If you choose to unhook yourself, the violinist will die, but if you let him stay hooked up to you to use your kidneys (for a period of nine months), then he will be cured and both of you will be free.Thomson asks what a person’s obligations in this situation are, and, to be consistent with Warren’s argument, she says it would be ridiculous to be stay in bed with the violinist, and thus you are able to leave at any time.
You shouldn’t feel responsible for the death of the violinist. But Marquis, in his essay, points out that, while good for dealing with abortions due to rape, the analogy doesn’t hold up. Thomson draws to our attention that in pregnancy a fetus uses the woman’s body for life-support, but the woman doesn’t use a fetus’s body for life support. Thus, in an abortion the life that is lost is the fetus’s, not the woman’s. This leaves us with a standoff. I think this overall analogy is not significantly helpful for either side of the argument. Warren then discusses whether or not abortion is actually the killing of a “person”, calling into question when a fetus matures to the point of personhood.

She defines the moral community as having some (the more the better) of these six characteristics: sentience (capacity to have conscious experiences), emotionality (capacity to feel sad, angry, happy, etc. , reason (capacity to solve new and relatively complex problems), capacity to communicate (by any means), self-awareness (concept of oneself), and finally moral agency (capacity to regulate one’s own actions). This is clearly very sketchy, because infants and mentally or physically challenged people are still referred to and thought of as “people”, or “members of the moral community”, despite a lack of many of these traits. Both articles address this idea of personhood, but neither one really wins. The good thing with defining personhood biologically—saying it’s a person at conception—quantifies it…it gives a definitive time, not some subjective date when certain sentient or reasoning qualities are met, and this lessens the confusion. But I still agree somewhat with the view held by Warren that fetuses can’t reason or fend for themselves nor (until cerebral development) do really anything other than exist. So again, I don’t think either side has a stronger case, because both Warren and Marquis have points that basically offset one another.
An interesting thing that Marquis then does is go on to talk about FLO, or “future like ours”. He claims that killing deprives a person of a future that is like ours, and says that abortion is killing a fetus that will have a future like ours. Taking someone’s entire future away from them is the worst of crimes, and he argues that abortion is this kind of deprivation of future. Killing an adult is an awful thing to do because it takes away that adult’s future, a future that is of great value. The same goes for aborted fetuses—they had a future that would be valued but it was taken away from them. Warren also argues that a woman has a right to life, so she can make a decision that she sees fit, since her body belongs to her and only her. In response to this, Marquis says that, except during rape (when he believes it is permissible), a fetus has just as much of a right to life as the woman, and therefore an abortion is wrong.
Marquis concludes that abortion is seriously wrong, except in unusual cases (rape, incest, and possible death of the mother).Depriving an FLO shows how wrong killing an adult is, and since fetuses have an FLO, killing them is just as bad. Warren concludes that fetuses are neither persons nor members of the moral community. She does not think that the fetus’s resemblance to a person nor the potential for becoming a person is a good enough claim to say it has an equal right to life. Marquis agrees with Warren inasmuch as the pregnancy is due to rape or other unusual condition, so there is no argument there. The argument over personhood is a much better one, and I think that both sides have a very strong position and arguments. On one side there is the lack of human traits to make a fetus a person, and on the other there is a biological definition of life which occurs at conception.
It is nearly impossible to determine who’s argument is stronger, because I can see how both sides can work. As for the woman’s rights, I think again it is two-sided. Neither side really comes away with a clear-cut victory.Warren argues that a woman can do whatever she wants with her body because it is her body but Marquis suggests that that cannot include killing a fetus (with an FLO). Overall I believe that Warren has stronger arguments, although I don’t necessarily agree with them. I think it is morally correct to carry the baby for nine months and then give it up for adoption or something like that, but that is such an unbelievably huge burden to put on someone, so I can understand where an abortion might need to take place. So, I feel that Mary Anne Warren gives stronger arguments only because she explains them in much more detail, allowing the reader to at least understand where she is coming from, whereas Don Marquis just tells us what his views are with little information to back them up.
Abortion is a very difficult topic to discuss or write upon, and, even though I disagree with her, I think Warren did a better job to explain what her views on abortion were and where they came from.
