Volunteering at East Lansing Health Care for elder people

Reflection Paper Volunteering at East Lansing Health Care for elder people Trough class I learned about the opportunity to volunteer at East Lansing Health Care for elder people. So far, I and have spent 15 hours helping the elderly at the institution. Every day senior people face obstacles that they need help with. First, it is hard for many of them to move and they need help with doing regular things. Second, senior people have much to say and they require moral support. By socializing with the elderly, I help them express their thoughts and ideas. They know that I truly care about them, and they feel safe and open with me.
I begin my usual volunteer day by talking with the elderly and keeping the conversation going until they have expressed themselves fully. These people need to be heard and understood – this is what mostly help them with. I provide moral support for the once who need It. Some seniors like to talk about their family and relatives. When I first started working at East Lansing Health Care for elder people, I met a resident named He was very friendly and keen to socialize with me. He told me that for him, family means everything and that he always keeps pictures of his family n his drawer. Lulled out his photo album and started introducing me to his family and telling me stories about them. It was very fascinating and interesting. I also showed him my family on the phone, after which started asking me about my family and what they do. It was a very friendly and relaxed conversation that I really enjoyed. A few days ago, I had a quite scientific conversation with one of the residents about the possible consequences of global warming. Was very knowledgeable of the issue and told me many interesting facts that he read in the news.
He told me that If our planet warms up by Just four degrees, no permanent Ice will remain on the planet. Also said that should this happen, rising sea levels will threat the humanity. I was amazed at how much passion this resident had trying to explain me what Is happening to our planet. At the end, asked about my plans for the Thanksgiving. He advised that I go vaults the Great Lakes and enjoy the wonderful nature in that area. Conversations like this really make me feel involved and I get personal satisfaction from the time I am devoting to volunteering.

Yesterday, I helped organize a Halloween party for the elders at the facility dining room. We served them food and a cake and made sure they were engaged in the party. I think events like this help the elders come together and remember their youth. I could see Joy in their eyes as they sang a country song together. Overall, I believe that my service benefits the community. Moreover, I am certain that volunteering experience also benefits me. First, it broadens my horizons by connecting me with the segment of the population I would not normally encounter In my day-to-day life on campus.
Through volunteering, I am able to see a clearer picture of the American society, which Is making me more aware. Moreover, by leaving my comfort zone. I am able to develop. Second, through volunteering I am people. In the future, I am also planning to volunteer at East Lansing Refugee Development Center and help refugees from all over the world. I am sure I will be able to help refugees with adapting to the American culture and getting over with the past. Many friends ask me, why do you volunteer? I usually respond that I feel like it is my moral obligation to help people.
In this particular case, helping the elderly reminds me helping my grandparents and I feel rewarded when they simply say “Thank you! ” or ask “When will you come again? ” I establish personal connections with the elders I help and instill trust in our relationships. We are friends, friends that can help each other for no profit. Thus, my experience volunteering at East Lansing Health Care for elder people has been very positive and rewarding. I plan to continue volunteering at the organization until the end of semester, and hopefully will be able to benefit many seniors, who need my help and attention.

Technology in Healthcare: Good or Bad

lI believe that technology is both good and bad in the healthcare field. With technology constantly changing, there is no end to what we can do. Technology allows us to use computers or computerized systems to collect, process, and store pertinent data. It also allows up to progress to the future with the machines we use in the healthcare field. Some of the upsides are better record keeping, data analysis, and convenient documentation which can provide more prompt medical billing. Patient security and safety is a concern with all advances in technology.
After all, without the patients, what business would the healthcare field have? Technology via machines that are used are constantly progressing. These can be very good in the development of better machines to help to aide patients in better treatment and less lengthy hospital stays. There are downsides to technology in healthcare though. Let’s think for a minute. What causes errors in healthcare technology? Human error. This can be via inadequately trained, inexperienced, tired, or even cases where people don’t admit they made a mistake.
How about faulty equipment or programming? If a machine or program is not running properly then it isn’t going to give the right results. One thing for sure is that there has to be constant monitoring and troubleshooting to maintain a safe environment for both the patient, the hospital or facility, and also for the companies who make the products we use in the technological aspect of healthcare. With technology being a definite for the future, I think it’s just a wait and see thing as to whether it ends up being better or worse.

Technology and Healthcare/Services

The world without prison would not have a proper criminal justice system. The law and government uses the prisons for punishment when criminal have committed a crime and other look at prison as a rehabilitate center for criminal that eventually would reunit with the society. People have there own opinion what prison is in that may be the case but people need to no that prison would always be apart of the criminal justice system.
This paper will explain the climate of our agency, focusing on the organizational behavior factors that have the most significant influence, such as Leardership in all levels of management, Culture, Systems, Law, and Influential stakeholders, community groups, employees, and other agencies. Leadership structure for a prison. The warden is first in this case and then you have the guards. The administrators have leadership as well which is pretty much being in charge of the inmates in prison. The administrators controls the inmates movements, take actions when rules are broken, punish, and even get rewarded for behavior.
Some of the inmates only follow the rule because the fear of the punishment and other just have respect. The leadership role that the warden and guards have was assigned by the government. The inmates in some sense has leadership as well. The inmates have gangs or groups that they put together and have a leader that give them structure. These leaders that create groups/organization and gangs are giving this leadership position because of there ability to lead as a dictate in not a follower.

These leaders have the knowledge to design structure for the gang based on loyalty. These leaders made up there own rules and regulations plus a punishment system for the gang members that disobey the rules. But for people to no these are rules inside the jail that prisoner leaders make they still must follow the warden rules. The prison also deals with different cultures that have leaders with there structure of there system as well. The system is structure just the way gangs are structure just a few of these cultures have less violents.
This kind of culture gang respect other gang members and also ensure order for inmates. Culture deals with creating numbers of gangs. Everyone is not just a gang banger but as a prisoner being around gangs could force someone to seek for protection through a gang or even just like to assicate with people like them to feel like they belong. These kinds of cultures also keeps a low profile with not involving themselves with other that are not like them most of these groups try to stay positive and productive.
You also have perpetuated cultures that have the most up right respect for inmates that been there for many years knowing that they have the wisdom to survive in there they get respect. Inmates that have been in a long time get respect because of the time that is being served other inmates look up to them for being able to survive in such harsh place. The warden also have other systems that inmates must follower such chores that must be shared with other inmates and labor. Now you have the outside groups that can be a factor with structuring gangs in prison from the outside.
Some civic groups or non-government organization can play a major role into structuring the gangs because of there interaction with inmates. These kind of outsider could influence inmates thoughts with negative suggestion while teaching them in them programs. These inmates trust these groups to help them cope with life in prison and out to try to stay positive at all times. The government and politician is the only hope for inmates because thats who provide the prisons with funds to have these kind of programs.
With these programs can help some inmates that want the help to cope with the problem and make better decisions in life and make beter priosn systems. The results to these programs would be less crime in jail or prison, less aggressiveness, more order, and more peace even better condition in the prison and maybe a possiblity of the authority and the inmates to work together in harmony. This discuss give an overview of the prison look at organizational structure.
Interactions which is among the warden, guards, inmates, and outsider showing how hard it is in the prison system of structure and hoping its the same everywhere. Once a person looked deep into considering some different things such as groups and stakeholders could help because they have a major role i within the prison system to help make a successful structure in these kinds of situation. The improvement of organization climate is going to come from the warden and the guards ensuring that they understand and feel the internal system that inmates tryed to created.

Healthcare Industry

The global healthcare industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 24.7%. This is made possible by the leveraging of various analytics tools and practices by the healthcare providers for improving their operational efficiency. Source: http://www.thehealthcareanalytics.comUnited States is at the front of the growth, accounting for 65.84% which can be attributed to country’s substantial investment in healthcare. Europe and Asia are on a path of steady growth with increased expenditure on technology, R;D and the emergence of Big Data.
Source: http://www.thehealthcareanalytics.comThe volume of data available is expected to be increasing at an exponential rate in the years ahead. Current cumbersome techniques of evaluation will soon have to pave the way for advanced analytics. These techniques, which have the ability to process, act on, manage and distribute data from variety of sources, will become the backbone of the healthcare sector. With this evaluation, the vast health data will be better understood and more effective, real time, specific decisions can be taken.
Source: http://www.techferry.com Current SituationBefore discussing about the future, it is important to reflect upon the current scenario. After the introduction of Electronic Health Records (EHR), amount of data collected have gone up significantly, creating meta data that can be used for querying. Healthcare organizations have resorted to analytical tools to improve the efficiency of patient examination. With a wide range of information about patient’s history, genetics and demographics, more customized quality care could be provided.

More and more venture capitalists have started investing into healthcare analytics. However, healthcare organizations are a long way from making effective use of such information. Proper understanding about the vast applications of such a resource is still scarce. Differentiating between quality data and noise has been becoming more and more difficult. High cost of analytic solutions and lack of skilled professionals have been a pain point in many organizations.
Leveraging bigdata analytics in healthcare

Patient profile analytics: Analytics can be applied to the existing patient profiles to identify those who may need preventive care. Patients who are at a risk of developing a disease like diabetes can be helped with lifestyle changes and preventive care.
Public health: By analysing the large amount of data available, disease patterns can be identified and outbreaks can be predicted by finding various correlations among the data points.
Resource management: With the development of location tracking technologies like RFIDs, patients, staffs, instruments and other resources in the enterprise can be effectively tracked and managed on a real time basis.
Fraud analysis: Hospitals on a daily basis receives large number of insurance claims. With the help of big data analytics, valid claims can be segregated out reducing wastage of time and resources.
Genomic Analytics: Genes of an individual and high-powered computing are combined to produce personalized treatments for each patient. Genetic disorders can be identified and target therapies can be developed.
Real-Time health care: Various mobile applications are being developed that help individuals to manage their care in a personalized manner. Wearables are being developed that can effectively track the safety and monitor the conditions in real-time by analysing the large volumes of fast moving data.
R & D: Predictive modelling and statistical methods can be used to improve clinical trials and finding the follow-on indications. Trial failures can be reduced and new product development can be given the push it demands.

Concerns and mitigation strategies

Data Integrity: The data in many situations comes from places with questionable data governance standards. Obtaining data that meets with the standards required for accurate use is one of the major ongoing battles in organizations. Lack of understanding of the usage of EHR (Electronic Healthcare Records) and importance of capturing quality data further adds to the lack of data quality.Future: Improvements in data capture by prioritizing valuable data types and educating clinicians about how to ensure that data is useful for downstream analytics are some of the ways forward.
Filtering: Presence of inaccurate unwanted data (noise) can derail the effectiveness of the analytics system. The data, which comes from disparate data sources in multiple formats, unless acted upon properly will lead to inconsistency. Though Data cleaning, process of ensuring the datasets are consistent, accurate and relevant, are being done, most organizations still use inefficient manual methods. Future: IT vendors are now coming up with applications which use machine learning that use rules to filter and segregate data, which will make the process effective and affordable
Storage: With the latest developments in technology, amount of data being generated and captured is increasing at an alarming rate. Even though most enterprises currently prefer on premise data storage which has the advantage of having better control on security and access, it has become difficult to modify, scale and adapt to situations.Future: Many organizations are slowly shifting to cloud storage and various hybrid approaches to store their data. This provides a highly scalable, cost effective solution which provides ease of access.
Security: With the recent episodes of high profile hackings, security breaches, ransomwares etc security has become a huge concern in this technological era.

From a small action like leaving the laptop unsecured to highly sophisticated hacking, data is not safe in spite of many initiatives being taken.Future: Employees are being educated in transmission security, authentication protocols, and controls over access, integrity, and auditing. Procedures such as using latest anti-virus software, setting up firewalls, encrypting sensitive data, and using multi-factor authentication are some of the ways to prevent security attacks.
As we move forward in 2018, organizations will have to analyse much more complex and high-volume data. With the development of customized, highly efficient data analytics practices, organizations can make sense of the data and use it for providing efficient personalized care. Data integrity is bound to become the most important factor as effectiveness of data analytical methods are dependent on incorporation of error free, relevant data from quality sources.References1. http://www.thehealthcareanalytics.com 2.

Health Care Ethics

The Bartling case was about whether William Bartling had the right, over the objection of his physicians and the hospital, to have life-support equipment disconnected despite the fact that withdrawal of such devices will surely hasten his death. When he entered Glendale Adventist Hospital in California in 1984, he was known to be suffering from emphysema and diffuse arteriosclerosis, coronary arteriosclerosis, abdominal aneurysm, and inoperable lung cancer.
At the end, He had to use mechanical respiratory and chest tube to assist his breathing in the ICU. Although each of these conditions could individually be lethal, he was not diagnosed as terminally ill. At first, Mr. Bartling asked his physicians to remove the ventilator but they refused. Then Mr. Bartling attempted to remove the ventilator tubes but was unsuccessful. Eventually, to prevent his attempt, he was placed in restraints so that the tubes could remain in place. The case was taken to Los Angeles Superior Court by Mr. Scott.
Because he was not considered terminally ill, the court refused either to allow the respirator to be disconnected or to order that Mr. Bartling’s hands be freed. At the second time, the case was taken to the California Court of Appeal. However, the result was that Mr. Bartling had the right to make his own decision, which was obviously different with the first time. So I think the main issue in this case is about patient’s decision-making capacity, specifically, when patient is able to make make the decision of his own medical treatments.
