What is Critical Thinking? Revisited What is Critical Thinking? The definition of critical thinking is “aiming to make wise decisions and come to correct conclusions, and not being sidetracked by temptation, emotion, greed, irrelevant considerations, stupidity, bias, or other similar things. ” (Moore, 2012) Therefore, to think critically is to think about what one is going to say or do before saying or doing it. When thinking before taking any action one is basically thinking about thinking and weighing the consequences of their actions before reacting to any giving situation.
A perfect example of this would be that there is a couple who desperately wants to get married but after both losing their jobs they are living with the young man’s parents until they can get on their feet. The young woman secures employment and is now ready to go ahead with the wedding. The young man thinks about it and comes to the conclusion that they should wait until not only he gets employed but until they are in a home of their own and then go to City Hall to get married since a wedding takes money that they do not have.
This was thinking critically because if they were to spend her wages on a wedding it is quite possible that they would still be living with his parents and not have any money saved because she at the time was the only person with an income. This would have been a consequence of not using critical thinking. I do not believe that my answer to this question this time around is much different than when I answered it in the earlier part of this course. Although my answer seems similar, my new knowledge on the subject is not.

I came into this course not knowing much at all about the subject. I never thought about thinking, unsound or valid arguments, deductive reasoning or any of the things that I now have learned from taking this course. What is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is the skill to apply reasoning and logic to fresh or unused ideas, views, and conditions. Thinking critically includes seeing stuffs in an open-minded manner and observing an idea or concept from as many approaches as likely. This essential skill lets people stare past their individual interpretations of the world and to improve and realize the views of others. It is frequently used in discussions, to procedure additional cogent and well-rounded arguments, and in science. The skill to think critically is essential, as it generates new opportunities in problem solving.
Being “open-minded” is a huge portion of critical thinking, permitting an individual to not simply search for out all likely answers to a problem, but to as well accept an response that is diverse from what was initially expected. Open-minded thinking needs that a individual does not take responsibility that his or her method of approaching a circumstances is always best, or even right. Critical thinking is well-defined as reasonable, reflective, responsible, and skillful thinking that is fixated on determining what to have confidence in or do.
Critical thinking is analytical thinking. This sort of thinking takes complications away from each other fundamentally and down to their origins, in order to solve the problems. Critical thinking is not a matter of gathering information. An individual with a respectable memory and who recognizes a lot of facts is not automatically good at critical thinking. A critical thinker is capable to deduce concerns from what he identifies, and he recognizes how to create the use of information to answer problems, and to search for related sources of information to advise him.

How is your response different from the one you wrote in Week One? The differences from what I wrote in week one till now is that in week one I was just looking up there information and just cite everything, but now I have a good understanding about what critical thinking is and how to be a critical thinker. In week one I did not know how to think critical but now everything I do I make sure I’m using critical thinking as an everyday route.

To the best of my understanding, Critical Thinking simply means one’s ability to painstakingly, objectively and meticulously examine a concept, position, proposition, or thought on a subject matter to either come up with new thoughts, fault some of the written propositions which might have been caused by the writer’s beliefs, or build on the established propositions based on one’s new perspective. That said, all the intention stated above must be supported with proven facts and standards or requirements of correctness, depth and accuracy (what is critical thinking? 2007). In other words, critical thinking is meditative in nature, authentic and involves required standards that must be adhered with. It is important to note that critical thinking goes beyond just solving problems: at the core of any critical thinking exercise is asking questions.
Having gone through the structured academic programs and processes in colleges and the acquisition of knowledge and skills (critical thinking and problem-solving skills) that should make graduates employable, employers are taken aback or shocked by what they see from the so called graduates. Few of these signs are what employers see and made them to make such comments:

Graduates sometimes make some dangerous mistakes and costly errors in the performance of their duties even after being taken through the in-house orientation or training that most company offer to their new employee. Given this, employers are quick to make comments or see such graduate as half-baked.
Graduates’ inability to bring innovative ideas to the table for the overall improvement and performance of such company. Employers want creative individuals who has something to offer as most of these companies are in one competition or the other with other companies providing the same service or producing the same product and want to bring an innovative person on board to improve their services.
Some graduates are so rigid and not always willing to consider and appraise views of other coworkers especially where such appraisal indicate that change is indeed needed. Being resistant to change is a sign of weak critical and problem-solving skill in itself.
As a result of not being willing to change, making repeated mistakes in the performance of their duties is inevitable. Such mistakes do sometimes cost employers fortunes, and in some cases could even affect the goodwill of the company.
As stated above, graduates’ inability to learn, adapt and solve problems at their work place will ultimately leads to their inability to take initiative. Most employers want to employ someone that can take initiative when needed or as occasion demand for it.

Employers are justified by these claims, and the aforementioned could be traced to few of the following factors

Colleges are not adequately teaching the practicability and applicability of critical thinking skills but rather more concerned with curriculum and teaching of the subject at a more surface level. Students’ lack of avenue to really put to use their critical thinking abilities has led to a situation where colleges produce ‘’academically sound’’ graduates that lack the needed critical and problem-solving skills to excel outside school.
Students’ educational background is a major factor in this regard. A student, who for long has been exposed to a system of education where all you need to do is to memorize and regurgitate all to pass test and examination will find it difficult to think critically. Getting to college where such student is expected to learn how to think critically, there are other factors that count towards their grades, and if such student is not really getting the practicability of the concept, there is always a second chance to learn, but the second chance is usually not available in a real work situation. No employer will want to take the risk. A college professor can only try to correct that faulty educational background but cannot fix it.
